French Week(!!) at the VCC Clifton Studio

This winter has been a really huge step for the ladies of Vintage City Classics. We are moving onward and upward! With this new year came new goals and a burst of good energy. As of February 1st (technically) we will no longer operating out of 314 Clifton Ave. It is the closing of a big chapter in our business and the opening of the next. I know this must have freaked you out... Oh NO! The VCC Jewelry Fort is closed!? Where will I be able to sip champagne and look at pretty jewelry at 2PM on a Monday!? Don't fret... The majority of the VCC Jewelry Vault landed at Joan's Uptown Pad. Close, convenient, and always open for a friend in need of a jewelry fix... (address upon request)... As you may have gathered, we are brimming with excitement over taking the next step....

Vintage City Vault (Episode #3)

It's hard to pick out my most favorite decade, lately I have been picking up a lot of 1940's-esque goodies from Via's. I have only rocked this once so far, but many wears are to come!

1940's black hat
with peach and black feathers.

Small round hat, it perches quite nicely on your head. Accented with delicate peach feathers on one side and a poof of soft black feathers on the top. I love the lightness of the top feathers and the peach color, well it's just yummy!

Revamped. "The Chery Load".

VCC was recently gifted an exciting box of broken, very old jewelry, random pieces and parts and our mouths were watering! As they say, one woman's trash is another woman's treasure...

We found ourselves digging into to a collection of very usable clasps, several pendants, lots of beads and crystals. Not to mention the excellent recycle-ables we can deconstruct for parts (loose stones, jump rings...). The excitement over these items sparked some massive creativity....

Revamped. Designing for Diane.

This early 20th century Japanese jewelry is an amazing and ornate style called Shakudo. It belongs to a friend of mine. A piece that was in her family for many years, she wanted to be able to wear it again, and asked what we could do for her.

Shakudo, invented by the Japanese, is a metal alloy of copper which contains 3% to 5% of gold. It has a very dark blue color approaching black and traditionally was mostly used in Japanese armor and swords. Banned in 1876 by their government, artisans turned to jewelry and to other objects to continue this honorable and idyllic craft.

In excellent condition, a set like this is valued at $150-$200.00

This necklace and bracelet set had been loved over the years and was in need of a little T.L.C..

Wanting to stay true to the original style, I found it a bit of a challenge to not overpower the delicate beauty in this jewelry. The subtle carvings of birds, flowers, and scenery in the individual pieces are examples of history and all around Japanese genius!

Joan&Garrett Tie the Knot

Ahh, the joys of wedding panning! This year, Joansy of VCC married Garett Born (Joan Born) and instead of stressing over logistics, she jumped right in to the fun stuff.

WEDDING-CRAFT-A-THON-2011!!!!

Vintage City Classics' expertise in designing for bridal parties allowed us to dive right in to this colorful project. Once the autumn date was set, there was no stopping the excitement to elaborate on such rich fall colors mixed with peacock feather motif (so Joansy!!!) The dress, a dazzling brooch bouquet, boutonnieres, corsages, invitations, thank you's, jewelry, veil, and on and on and on. Joan had her hands in all the pretty details.

Needless to say, the wedding had VCC all over it! Take a look at some of the handy work we put together for the big day! Hair pieces and jewelry for all of the bridesmaids... yes... all eight of them.

The Vintage City Vault (Episode #2)

As the first find out of my own personal collection, I wanted to start with something that really represented my style. I love everything high fashion and glamourous, anything that puts a sparkle in my eye. Its hard to pick my favorites, as I usually find myself dripping in the biggest shiniest accessories, but I feel that this finds really reflects my personality... and they remind me of on of my favorite style icons, ELIZABETH TAYLOR!

The sparkliest garage sale find EVER! These earrings are an amazing '80's pair of clip ons that are as comfortable as they come. Holly's closet is full of dazzling, but these stand out for their amazing shine factor. There is no clear marking on them, and looking at the way they are constructed, it is our guess they very well may be home made. Somebody was feeling lavish!! Eat your heart out Elizabeth Taylor!

Vintage City Vault (Part 1)

I am proud and elated to start of this little VCC webisode (aka blog section). We, as a group of thrifters and finders, have amassed an impressive amount of really really awesome things. More importantly, they are things that really epitomize our style. As the beginning of the peek into the Vintage Vault, I wanted to start things off with a bang. A 1940's fully beaded purse with beautiful warm metal copper beads, it shines and sparkles... and well... it lights up my life. It had a really great working metal frame and what I like to call, "the bracelet handle". This bag is one of my more favorite items that I have snatched from the shelves at Via's. The copper looks great with any outfit, I've dressed it up, down and worn it all around. My mom actually just carried it at my wedding. Ca-ute!

You may not know this yet, but the VCC ladies are masters of deconstruction, BUT we only take things apart that can no longer live on in their present state (broken, abused, and misused jewels)... or things that are way too ugly to stay the way they are. Some things come to us that are just too unique to do anything but offer them to you at fabulous prices. That being said, lets explore one of our favorite vintage jewelry brands that we are always excited to see show up at a G-sale....

WEISS! Always stunning... The pieces of Weiss jewelry that I have in my collection are staples and statements. From beautifully crafted Aurora clip-ons to stunning brooches and three strand bracelets with clear rhinestones. I feel like I can look in a case of jewelry and it stands out among the rest, maybe that's just because I have a Weiss-dar.

Lets have a look-sie at my favorite Weiss purchase:

BAM! Fabulous round aurora clip-on earrings from Via's Vintage

Why is this brand so amazing you ask? Weiss jewelry was most popular in the 1950-60's and features Austrian rhinestones, insuring impeccable quality and brilliance. The Weiss brand was undervalued in it's time, the quality and design is on par with brands like Eisenberg, but with a more affordable price range. Their scale was no where near larger brands like Trifari, but they offered a unique and dazzling higher and lower end lines as well as several collectable items. You can identify your Weiss jewelry with the marking "WEISS" in block letters, "Weiss" in script or a "W" with a crown.

To ring in the shopping, we are opening up our studio on Sunday and Monday June 26th and 27th to the public, to stop in and discover VCC Summer collection and indulge themselves in a little retail therapy. You won't want to miss the opportunity to talk to the VCC ladies about all your accessory needs. We will have tools on hand for jewelry repairs and our design skills ready for any custom orders and design consultations.

Imagine my delight!

I am standing outside a surf shop, in a little town in Michigan, waiting for my fiancé and his brother to buy some flip flops. Anita, my mother-in-law-to-be, turned around and saw a big poster with the word "BLING", I dropped everything and went to investigate....

We stumbled upon a collection of Vintage Costume Jewelry from the 1920's to the 1960's. Don't fret, I took plenty of photos... With permission that is.

VCC values the beauty in even the oddest finds. These buttons came off a vintage Lilly Ann suit from Via's, we took 'em, scrubbed 'em down, and blinged 'em up! Endless possibilities of how to use these pretties await. In fact, this is one of our specialties... this day has been dedicated to repair; we strengthen, clean, replace stones and repair the broken to create a new/old piece for sale or redesign.

Spring has finally graced our lovely city with her presence, which in Minneapolis means a lot! Brightly colored dresses, finicky weather(meanings it's impossible to know how to dress from day to day...), and GARAGE SALES! Hooray! Our favorite time of the year has finally arrived! We've had the itch for some time now, although hard core Minnesotans have had their signs out as early as mid March eager to clear out and dust off the things they have been staring at for months over the winter. This is the kind of thing we ladies get excited about. Oh, the treasures we will find! It's our pleasure to shop your spring clean out as Vintage City Classics is centered around the saying "One woman's trash is another woman's treasure."

REVAMPED. REDESIGNED. RECYCLED... that is!

It's already well into garage sale season and if you like to find the bargains, here are some YARD SALE DO'S AND DON'TS...

DO! Watch for church sales. The little old ladies are so sweet and they have the best stuff!

DO! Hit up neighborhood sales. You can park and walk to multiple sales and save on gas.

DON'T! Be afraid to bargain a little. I'm guessing they don't want to haul all their stuff back inside.

DO!Carry cash. Small bills. And have plenty of cents.

DON'T! Buy anything that needs repair. Seriously, are you going to fix it???

DO! Get your breaks checked. That one is based on personal experience.

Finally, we are seeing signs of some warmth and sunshine in the MPLS area! In an ode to spring we put together a few of our favorite designs that epitomize the lighthearted frivolity and style of the coming months. Bright, budding baubles have the spirit of springtime!

VCC is no stranger to great vintage pieces. Recently, we were approached by jewelry lover Amanda with a few brooches from her grandma. She wanted to convert these two items into a new and fresh look. We made this statement necklace with the brooches and several unique recycled chains and beads. What a fitting tribute to her stylish Grams!

We start with a 1940's style Neiman Marcus tangerine hat.  We took the lining out and began to embellish the hat from there. Adding vintage rhinestone trim, bundles of soft white ostrich feathers and a stunning smokey grey brooch. 


We were able to work around the imperfections in the hat, creating a solidly structured piece that lays comfortably in your fabulous up-do.

There is nothing more exciting then thinking about your wedding outfit! From your jewel tipped heels to your rhinestone crowned head! And finding just the right accessories to add your touch to a day that truly all about the bride is what brings out your own dazzling personality. VCC has always specialized in custom jewelry, whether converting your grandmother's glamorous, yet super uncomfortable, clip-on earrings or creating a hand made custom feather hairpiece of your dreams.

Recently we were approached with a project of creating a floral bouquet out of brooches. A Brooch Bouquet! Oooh! Sounds sparkly. We can do that... This brides' good sense and excellent taste brought her to Vintage City Classics. We had never seen one of these before but, proud to say, we rocked it out!!!

Naturally we needed to have a photo shoot immediately to get a great picture of this thing. This was Monday. It was a smooth sailing photo shoot thanks to top stylist Jen Des Lauriers, expert posing from photographer Garrett Born and two very lovlely models. Stay tuned to fb for more from this photoshoot. Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.
